Ambulance station neglected
“Our service delivery has deteriorated, because nobody can expect paramedics to save lives under these conditions.,” said the man.
Mpumalanga Emergency Medical Service employees based at the Eendracht Station, are stationed in dilapidated buildings and the yard is not maintained.
The area poses a safety hazard, because the nearby buildings do not have roofs, doors and windows and can harbour criminals.
The building used to be a school that was closed down by the Department of Basic Education.
Police recently recovered electrical appliances hidden by criminals in the same building.
EMS employees work 24 hours shifts and it was alleged that they were promised to be moved to another area last year.
One of the ambulances parked outside, has had a broken rear window since last year.
An employee who wished to stay anonymous in fear of being victimised, said though they suffer poor hygienic and working conditions, they still have a passion to go out and save lives.
An Eendracht resident said the community feels sorry for the paramedics who are forced to work from these dilapidated buildings that used to harbour thieves and drug users.
“Our service delivery has deteriorated, because nobody can expect paramedics to save lives under these conditions.,” said the man.
The Mpumalanga Department of Health was contacted but did not comment.
