The Standerton Correctional Service Centre is forced to resort to extreme measures because of the lack of water in the facility.
This centre has been experiencing water issues for more than five years and the situation has not improved.
It is not clear what is causing the problem, but they said the Lekwa Municipality said there is a pipe that needs to be replaced in order to have access to water.
Apparently the centre is looking into moving the offenders to other correctional centres because of the situation.
Mr Johannes van der Wath, DA Ward 10 councillor, has tried to get to the bottom of the issue, but has not been successful.
According to him, he wrote letters to the municipality when he was a Ward 8 councillor, but did not receive any response.
“I also reported the matter to the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta), the Department of Health, the Department of Water and Sanitation and the Public Protector,” Mr Van der Wath said.
