Sakhisizwe Progressive Movement (Sapromo) warned locals about scamsters who target catering companies.
According to the party leader, Mr Sibusiso Hlolweni, they claim to be representing government departments and would request victims to submit their quotations.
They then rob the victims of their money.
He said the scamsters asked a catering company in the area recently to send their quotation for catering for 50 people, claiming they were from the Department of Arts and Culture.
They then supposedly deposited a cheque, but said they deposited R7 000 more than was agreed upon.
Mr Hlolweni said they requested that the R7 000 be returned to them.
“The women from the catering company suspected something was wrong and contacted the local police.
“The police could however not do anything because the women were not yet robbed of any money.
“We would like to ask the victims to report these matters to the police, so it would become known that such crimes do exist.
“Sapromo also ask people never to deposit money into strangers’ account.”
Mr Hlolweni said Sapromo is trying to catch the suspects by using private security people and urged the community that if they receive the same kind of requests, to contact him at shlolweni@gmail.com with all the details.
Capt Magonseni Nkosi, eMbalenhle Police Station’s spokesman, said no case was opened and encouraged the victims to contact the police.
