SAIMC Secunda learns about the Internet of Things

The Internet of Things (IoT) is the inter-networking of physical devices, vehicles (also referred to as “connected devices” and “smart devices”), buildings and other items embedded with electronics, software, sensors, actuators, and network connectivity which enable these objects to collect and exchange data.

SECUNDA – The Society for Automation, Instrumentation, Measurement and Control (SAIMC) Secunda branch held their monthly technology evening for 2017 at Honeywell in Secunda on Thursday 1 June.

Mr Colin Morris from Weidmuller did a presentation on The Internet of Things (IoT) in photo voltaic string monitoring at utility scale plants.

The IoT is the inter-networking of physical devices, vehicles (also referred to as connected devices and smart devices), buildings and other items embedded with electronics, software, sensors, actuators, and network connectivity which enable these objects to collect and exchange data.

The presentation employs a balanced scorecard approach to identify the practices that contribute to excellence in Solar Plant management.

A well-run solar plant is productive, safe, cost effective and contributes to high customer service.

“We thank Mr Morris who took the time to come and do this very interesting presentation,” said Mr Johan Maritz, chairman of the Secunda branch.

All instrumentation and control related mechanicians, technicians and/or engineers are welcome to attend the monthly technology events.

The planned dates for the meetings for the rest of the year are 6 July, 3 August, 7 September, 12 October and 2 November.

All the Secunda SAIMC presentations will earn CPD points for ECSA-registered persons and any enquiries can be directed to Mr Maritz at johanmaritz260@gmail.com or 082 856 3865.
