John Moodie explains to SAIMC members the fundamentals of meter proving
“A liquid flow prover is an open or closed vessel of known volume used as a volumetric reference standard for the calibration of meters in liquid petroleum service.”
Mr John Moodie from Honeywell enlightened the Secunda SAIMC members with a presentation on the fundamentals of meter proving.
When it comes to custody transfer, accuracy is key because every drop counts.
“The consequences of inaccurate measurements are under-registration that could cause a loss of revenue and over-registration could cause customer complaints, retroactive rebates, potential law suits and unplanned liabilities.
“Accuracy of measured volume must be traceable to a standard recognised by the International Bureau of Legal Metrology (BIML) and should be validated at operating conditions.
“A liquid flow prover is an open or closed vessel of known volume used as a volumetric reference standard for the calibration of meters in liquid petroleum service.
“There are different types of flow meter proving techniques that have been used, such as volumetric and gravimetric provers, master meter provers, ball/pipe provers and small volume provers,” Mr Moodie explained.
In conclusion, the accuracy of flow meters when it comes to custody transfer, is of utmost importance and should be proven regularly in order to prevent loss of revenue, unsatisfied customers and possible lawsuits.
All instrumentation and control-related mechanicians, technicians and/or engineers are welcome to attend SAIMC’s monthly technology events this year.
The planned dates for the rest of the year are: 3 August, 7 September, 12 October and 2 November.
