Local forums demand tenders from Elikhulu Mine Project
Various forums from the Govan Mbeki Municipality took to the street to demand the total shut down of the Elikhulu Project until locals are given jobs and business.
Protesting Business Forums said they can no longer stand by and watch while outsiders benefit and are prioritised and are given tenders in the Elikhulu Project.
Pan African Resources launched the R1.7 billion Elikhulu Tailings Re-treatment Project in September.
This marked the official start of the construction of the plant that is expected to produce an average of 50 000 ounces of gold per year for the next 13 years.
The combined mineral reserve contains an estimated 1.7 million ounces of which an estimated of 688 000 ounces will be recovered over the life of the project.
This estimate excludes the inferred resource of 244 398 ounces of gold contained in the soil beneath the existing tailing dumps which could potentially increase the project life.
The project is expected to create more than 700 jobs during construction and approximately 250 direct permanent jobs once the plant is in production.
