Lekwa Local Municipality are going to take action against illegal land invaders

The land has been earmarked for a future project aimed at providing properly planned and serviced housing opportunities for the community.

The Lekwa Municipality issued a stern warning about the ongoing illegal invasion and occupation of council-owned land at a farm in Rooikoppen.

According to the municipal press release, the land has been earmarked for a future Integrated Human Settlement Development project aimed at providing properly planned and serviced housing opportunities for the community.

The press release stated that unlawful occupation of the land undermines these efforts and disrupts long-term planning intended to benefit all residents.

Municipal officials emphasised that occupying municipal land without authorisation is illegal and negatively affects service delivery planning, infrastructure development, and orderly spatial growth.

They said the municipality will be compelled to enforce applicable legislation to protect public land and prevent further unlawful occupation.

Should the notice not be adhered to, the following actions will be taken by the municipality:

  • Formal notices to vacate the land within a specified period will be issued to all unlawful occupants.
  • Legal proceedings for eviction will be instituted.
  • Eviction orders will be obtained and enforced with the help of the law enforcement department.
  • All unlawful structures will be removed in accordance with court directives.
  • All costs incurred during the process will be recovered.
  • Criminal cases will be opened against all people or groups found to be instigating or promoting illegal land invasion.

Municipal officials urged the community to refrain from taking part in or promoting illegal land invasion activities and warned that those involved may face legal consequences in line with relevant laws and regulations.
