LYEDF promises complete shutdown of Standerton Oil Mills
“If they are arrogant towards us, we will show them who is boss the hard way,” Mr Xolani Sophiseka, spokesman of the LYDEF, said.
The Lekwa Youth Economic Development Forum (LYEDF) picketed in front of Standerton Oil Mills on 18 October, following their 26 September protest with a repeated blocking of trucks from entering and leaving the company.
The LYEDF had a what they call an “unproductive” meeting with the Cofco Intl/Standerton Oil Mills management after the handing over of a memorandum with their list of grievances.
“If they are arrogant towards us, we will show them who is boss the hard way,” Mr Xolani Sophiseka, spokesman of the LYDEF, said.
The picketers ordered truck drivers to park in a manner that blocked traffic and also used heavy rocks to obstruct motorists.
The memorandum demanded the following:
• The resignation of Mr Gavin Barbarini, general manager.
The forum made allegations that he is a corrupt, condoning racist action and nepotism in the workplace.
• The company be held accountable in terms of corporate social investment.
• Investment in skills development in the community.
• More hiring of local people.
