Govan Mbeki Municipality fails to tend to river of sewage

Sewage leak becomes river of sewage.

Residents have been complaining about a huge sewage leak in the open field behind Laerskool Oranjegloed Primary School since 6 December.

The school reported it to Govan Mbeki Municipality, a guest house owner and a DA councillor, Ms Mariaan Chamberlain, but the problem still persists.

Residents say the river of sewage is a health risk.
The sewage leak soon after it began on 6 December.

According to Ms Chamberlain municipal workers had a look at the problem, but the leak has not been fixed.

“They will need about 150 bags of lime to fix this sewage leakage and they told me they do not have lime in stock right now,” said Ms Chamberlain.

Residents are complaining that the smell is unbearable and that it poses a health risk.

A health inspector also visited the site and told the municipality it is unacceptable.

This sewage leak flows straight into the Duck Pond.

The Ridge Times asked the municipal manager of Govan Mbeki Municipality, Mr Thisha Mhlanga, for comment, but he said he was in a meeting and would respond later.
