Dog undergoes operation after being injured trying to get away from fireworks

Some residents were upset about the fireworks being discharged on New Year’s Eve, while others were the culprits who did not obey the law to discharge fireworks only at designated areas.

“It sounded like a war zone here,” said a resident from Evander.

Animal lovers had their hands full with many animals getting lost and the Highveld Ridge SPCA said their kennels are full after the festive season.

Ms Estelle Swart, DA councillor, received numerous complaints from residents who said people were not obeying the law to discharge fireworks at designated places.

“I gave everything through to the call centre as the municipality urged us to do, but it does not look as though it was followed up,” said Ms Swart.

A resident from Bethal’s dog had to have an operation after injuring himself while he tried to get away from the fireworks.

“He had a hole in his back,” said the resident.
