Evander family loses everything in fire
A family from Evander lost everything when their house caught fire.
Seeing your home being destroyed is something the human mind cannot comprehend, explained Mr Christo and Ms Ansie Jansen van Vuren whose house in Evander was incinerated last Wednesday, 17 January.
“We lost everything except the clothes on our backs,” they told the newspaper.
The monetary loss however, does not come close the sentimental wealth the Jansen van Vurens collected over their 33 years of marriage.
“All our memories, photos and sentimental things are now gone.”
The house in Canterbury Road was engulfed in flames about 20 minutes after the electricity supply was restored in Evander.
Ms Constance Kruger, the back neighbour, explained that shortly after the electricity came on, she and her husband, Wicus, smelled smoke.
He followed the odor outside and saw the house on fire.
The Krugers phoned the fire brigade.
The Jansen van Vuren couple and their son, Christiaan, were at their respective places of work at the time, and their daughter Carmin was at Hoërskool Secunda for her first day in Grade 9.
Teachers from the nearby Tinky Tonky crèche helped to rescue the dogs outside.
The Van Vurens’ adult Yorkshire terriers escaped the flames, but five Yorkshire terrier puppies and an African Grey parrot named Nicky, succumbed to the fire.
