Thabang a happy child despite being born with a developmental disability
“Our monthly expenses do not allow us to buy a wheelchair and the trolley is often difficult to get around with.”
Thabang Sibiya (12) was born with cerebral palsy, a developmental disability.
He is unable to properly walk, talk or eat.
He is cared for by his older sister, Ms Gugu Ndlovu (32), after their mother had died in 2013.
“Thabang might be physically challenged, but he is an active and happy child,” said Ms Ndlovu.
Her children are able to communicate with Thabang who understands spoken words and tries to express himself through mumbling.
Thabang used a walking stick to help him to get around, but after a couple of years the walking stick needed to be replaced.
His uncle was able to get him a small pushable trolley.
“There are times when he gets overly excited and then trips, but he always picks himself up,” said Ms Ndlovu.
Thabang attends school in Leandra and his teachers are impressed with his marks.
He needs to be bathed and fed, because he struggles to do it himself.
“It is a full-time job to take care of him,” said Ms Ndlovu.
She wishes to take Thabang to town, but he needs to be carried.
