River of sewage still not fixed behind Oranjegloed

Govan Mbeki Municipality fails to fix sewage leakage behind Laerskool Oranjegloed Primary School in Secunda.

SECUNDA – Even after DA councillor, Ms Mariaan Chamberlain, got officials from the Gauteng Department of Water and Sanitation, as well as a health inspector from the Gert Sibande District Municipality to visit the site where sewage spilled behind Laerskool Oranjegloed Primary School, Govan Mbeki Municipality has still not attended to the problem.

Sewage has been flowing behind the school since last year and Ms Chamberlain, residents and the school contacted the municipality numerous times, but to no avail.

Municipal workers visited the site last year and said they needed lime to tend to the problem. They however did not have lime and never returned.

Ms Chamberlain contacted the municipality again in January. They said they still did not have lime.

The municipality later said they were waiting for it to stop raining and the area to dry so they can fix the problem.

The sewage is now dry and pieces of toilet paper can still be seen.

Residents said it poses a health risk and the health inspector said it was unacceptable.

The sewage flows directly into the Duck Pond where families enjoy picnics and fishing over weekends.

The newspaper asked the municipal manager of Govan Mbeki Municipality, Mr Thisha Mhlanga, for comment on Monday, 12 March, but he did not respond.

The newspaper asked Mr Mhlanga whether he was aware of the sewage problem, when it would be fixed and why it has not been fixed yet.
