Retired chief gives Alf his firefighter kit

The kit came in handy that same afternoon when a house in Wolwespruit Street caught fire

SECUNDA – Mr Alf Byleveldt from Jelani Security was at a loss for words when he was given a brand-new firefighter kit recently.

The Echo published a story on 28 June about Mr Byleveldt, a former firefighter, who often help out on burn scenes. He does this work voluntarily.

Mr Pine Pienaar, former fire chief at Sasol, was moved by the article and Mr Byleveldt’s request for a new firefighter kit as his was worn out and no longer usable.

He phoned Mr Byleveldt and donated his brand-new firefighting kit complete with helmet, boots, jacket and pants, as well as a kit to use when fighting veld fires.

“I think he does excellent work and could do with my kit that I no longer use,” Mr Pienaar said.

The kit, although a rather big fit for Mr Byleveldt, came in handy that same afternoon when a house in Wolwespruit Street, Secunda, caught fire.
