Women protest against women and child abuse in Secunda

Organisation encourage people to totally shutdown and support them on Wednesday.

SECUNDA – Supporters of Total Shutdown, a non-profit organisation, walked the streets on Friday, 27 July to create awareness about violence and abuse against women and children.

They had a silent protest at the traffic lights at PDP Kruger and Oliver Tambo Street intersection and handed out flyers to inform people of their planned marches in South Africa.

The biggest one will be held in Pretoria and they hope to get two million people to join them.

Ms Phumzile Mnisi, Secunda resident, said people who cannot attend the marches, can still support them by totally shutting down on Wednesday, 1 August.

“We want the government to know that we as women are tired of violence against women and children and want them to do something about it,” said Ms Mnisi.

Supporters who will march in 15 different towns in South Africa, will hand over memorandums to the councils to demand the government to act on this issue.

The marches are only for women to attend, but Ms Mnisi said men can still support their action by not being economically active on Wednesday.

“Women who cannot attend the marches, can also not be economically active and they must do nothing on Wednesday, their husbands can cook and take care of the children.

“People must realise that women are important and valuable to our country,” said Ms Mnisi.

One of the slogans of Total Shutdown is: My body, not your crime scene.
