SECUNDA – An illegal dirt road in Ext 23 is cause for concern for police and residents in the area.
This path that joins the outskirts of Ext 23 where the new town developments end with the Trichardt/Kinross road and neighbouring mine routes, has been eked out through the field by motorists seeking short cuts.
“It is an illegal road that is very dangerous. If you are involved in an accident on this road, you insurance will probably not cover you,” said Ms Ena van Rooyen, DA councillor in the Govan Mbeki Municipality.
She said this path has also become an escape route for criminals.
“Car thieves recently escaped with stolen cars via this route. This is a grave concern for residents, the police and the Community Policing Forum.”
Mr Kosie van der Merwe, owner of the farm land through which the path winds towards the main road, supports Ms Van Rooyen in her endeavour to close that route.
“It is also troublesome to me. People have now also begun dumping their refuse on my property.”
Mr Van der Merwe said the road on his side has been closed off and he is willing to help pile rocks to completely close off access to his farmland.
