Solidarity and Sasol will meet again at CCMA

The Mining Charter was published on Thursday, 27 September.

SECUNDA – The trade union, Solidarity, approached the Department of Mineral Resources and the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) to explain the intention and spirit of the Mining Charter to Solidarity and Sasol.

This comes after the trade union took Sasol on about Sasol’s newest scheme, Khanyisa, that only includes black people.

The Mining Charter was published on Thursday, 27 September.

“According to the charter, employees must share in company shareholding and all employees must benefit from employee ownership plans,” said Dr Dirk Hermann, Solidarity’s Chief Executive.

“As such, the charter does not make a distinction between employees based on race.”

Solidarity requested Sasol to amend its Khanyisa scheme.

“Being part of the mining industry, Sasol has to comply with the Mining Charter.

“If Sasol does not amend its Khanyisa employee share ownership plan, then they are not observing the consensus achieved between parties in the mining industry.”

According to Dr Hermann, the negotiators of the Mining Charter went out from the premise that workers were merely workers and that no distinction based on race should be made on the factory floor.

“Such distinction in shareholding can lead to racial tension, which indeed is now the case at Sasol.”

Sasol and Solidarity recently met at the CCMA to mediate, but the meeting was postponed to Wednesday, 3 October, to get clarity on the Mining Charter.

Meanwhile, Solidarity has announced that planning is underway for a huge march to Sasol’s head office in Sandton.
