Solidarity will organise national protest after no agreement reached with Sasol
Trade union still not happy after meeting with Sasol
SECUNDA – The trade union, Solidarity and Sasol had another meeting at the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) on Wednesday, 3 October about Sasol’s latest shares scheme, Khanyisa, that only caters for black employees.
Solidarity had meetings with Sasol and Solidarity members and mostly white Sasol employees eventually made their voices heard by striking on Thursday, 6 September in front of Sasol’s main gate, Charlie 1.
This forced Sasol to close the gate as other workers could not enter while white employees marched in front of the gate and took part in a peaceful strike.
Solidarity members then continued on a slow strike which means they attend work, but only execute the necessary tasks at work.
After the full strike on 6 September, the CCMA approached Sasol and Solidarity and offered to mediate during meetings.
However, according to Mr Deon Reyneke, Deputy General Secretary of Solidarity, these meetings did not yield a solution for the ongoing dispute.
Mr Reyneke said Sasol refused to whatsoever concede to the striking workers’ requests.
“Sasol maintains in no uncertain terms that its division of the workforce on the basis of race is acceptable and constitutes justified discrimination,” said Mr Reyneke.
“The striking workers’ clear request for inclusivity is simply being swept off the table.
“Solidarity will now intensify the strike and the creation of awareness about this important issue by declaring a national day of protest by its members and by organising a protest march to Sasol’s head office in Sandton.
“Full details of the protest march will be announced soon.”
