Executive mayor of GMM will appear in court on Wednesday

She allegedly assaulted a municipal official in June.

SECUNDA – Ms Jane Gwebu, municipal official of the finance department, is pleased that Ms Thandi Ngxonono, executive mayor, will finally have her day in court.

She accused her of slapping her in the face which allegedly led to serious injuries in June.

Ms Gwebu alleged that she received a message during a tea break in June that Ms Ngxonono wanted to see her.

She immediately went to the mayor’s office.

Ms Ethel Nkosi, MMC of Planning and Development, was also in the office.

Ms Gwebu alleged that Ms Ngxonono was furious and accused her of gossiping about her before she slapped her.

“I am happy that the law is finally taking its course.

“I have been worried because the matter had dragged too long without any progress.

“I trust the justice system and that Ms Ngxonono will be prosecuted for what she did to me.”

This put Ms Ngxonono in the hot seat as the opposition party wanted her to be suspended following the allegation.

She has since distanced herself from the allegation and said it was a smear campaign aimed at tarnishing her image.

The Sakhisizwe Progressive Movement staged a walk out of a council meeting after their motion to suspend Ms Ngxonono failed on 31 July.

Sapromo further proposed that an ethics committee was established to investigate the conduct of the mayor and other councillors.

The motion was rejected by the majority party after which Mr Sibusiso Hlolweni, leader of Sapromo, walked out in protest.

Mr Ngxonono will appear in the Secunda Magistrate’s Court on 17 October.
