New transformer will solve safety hazard at Davies Court in Secunda

Residents are urged to refrain from removing the barricade tapes around those temporary transformers

SECUNDA – The electrical transformer in front of Davies Court will soon be replaced.

Mr Donald Green, a spokesman for the Govan Mbeki Municipality, said the transformer has been ordered and a service provider will replace it within the next few days.

Residents in the area, as well as Mr Marinus Strydom, principal of Highveld Ridge Primary School that is just around the corner from where this transformer is, were concerned for the safety of pedestrians, especially for the learners and also the homeless people who often sleep behind the transformer.

The temporary transformer is hooked up to the original power source in front of the Davies Court old age flats.

The original transformer was faulty and a few months ago the residents of Davies Court spent several days without electricity supply. The problem was solved temporarily by placing a smaller, temporary transformer, next to the original transformer.

Safety concerns were raised, because the original transformer is open with wires running from it to the temporary transformer.

The only thing that warned people to stay away, is a sagging old barrier tape.

Ms Mariaan Chamberlain, DA councillor, also reported the seemingly unsafe situation to the technical department.

Mr Green said on Monday, 5 November, that the transformer is among the four that have been ordered and will be replaced.

“Residents are urged to refrain from removing the barricade tapes around those temporary transformers,” said Mr Green.
