Flying squad cop dies after accident on N17

Const OK Mabunda served this unit for 11 years and will be dearly missed

KINROSS – Const Orance Khanuani Mabunda (37), a member of the Secunda Police’s Flying Squad, died late Monday afternoon, 3 December after sustaining serious injuries in a vehicle accident on the N17 highway earlier that day.

He and a colleague were on duty when their police car collided with an Isuzu bakkie near the water reservoirs between Kinross and Trichardt just before noon.

At the time it was said that the colleague sustained moderate injuries and that Const Mabunda, who was driving, sustained serious injuries.

The driver of the bakkie was only lightly injured.

ER24 ambulance services and Langamed South transported the injured to hospital.

Capt Mabunda’s condition deteriorated while at the hospital and he died while awaiting a medical helicopter to fly him to a specialised hospital in Gauteng.

The police, traffic department, Jelani Security, the municipal fire brigade and GTR Towing were on the scene.

Capt Bettina Zondo, Secunda police spokesman, said the police are investigating the accident.

According to Capt Shane Bhagwandeen, commander of the Flying Squad, Const Mabunda served this unit for 11 years and will be dearly missed.

The funeral arrangements were not yet finalised at the time of going to press.
