Water quality concerns Waterval Forum’s members
Govan Mbeki Municipality has no budget for maintenance
SECUNDA – Members of the Waterval Forum had a meeting recently and discussed water and pollution issues in the area.
Representatives from several mines, Rand Water, Sasol and residents of Brendan Village attended the meeting.
Mr Alfred Mangena of Govan Mbeki Municipality’s technical department was re-elected as the chairman of the Waterval Forum.
Mr Mangena said his objectives are to monitor wastewater from consumer to catchment, to ensure compliance with the water usage licence, to make water usage data public and to ensure that the public is familiar with the importance of reporting sewage spills.
He showed statistics and reports of the water quality in the area.
Mr Mangena reported on the condition of sewer pump stations in the area and said the biggest problem they face is that there is no budget for maintenance.
Members were concerned about the quality of the water in the area and contaminated water flowing into rivers and eventually into the Vaal River.
Mr Reveck Hariram of Rand Water said they are involved in water sanitation projects in the Secunda and Standerton areas.
Members said it is worrying that no representatives from other municipal departments attended the meeting.
