eMBALENHLE – Mihle Zingamo, Cynthia Masilela, Lerato Nkutha, Nokulunga Nkutha and one unidentified young girl who were raped and murdered in Extension 17 were remembered on 6 December.
Flowers and stones were placed on the scenes where their bodies were dumped.
Local law enforcement agencies, friends and families of the victims, non-government organisations and the civil society gathered at the Methodist Church to commemorate their lives as part of the 16 days of activism against women and child abuse.

The attendees were told about the importance of speaking up about gender based violence.
Whistles were distributed to girls to blow in case of emergency.
Ms Tracy Keen-Harak, a prosecutor in the sexual offences court and also at the helm of the local Thutuzela (rape crisis centre in Evander), told the community that law enforcement agencies are doing everything in their power to bring to book the perpetrators of these crimes.
She added that the police have formed a tasked team to solve these cases.
