Matshidiso Makgato from Secunda recently won a gold medal in the 80m race for girls U/11 at the Sub-Youth Inter Provincial Track and Field Championships, held in the Kenneth McArthur Athletics Stadium in Potchefstroom, recently.

She also achieved bronze in the long jump and a fourth place in the 100m.

Matshidiso is only 11-years-old. In 2017, when she was 10, she won the school championships with a first place in the long jump.

She is part of the Speedsters training group, where Ms Janine Faulha coaches her.

The assistant coach is Mr Francois Esterhuizen. The Sub-Youth Inter Provincial Track and Field Championships is meant for the country’s top young athletes between the ages of U/7 to U/15.

Athletics Central North West will host this prestigious athletic event that can be seen as an unofficial SA Championships for the athletes in this specific age category.
