Nehawu’s strike disturbs classes at Gert Sibande College

Nehawu plans to intensify the strike and that Gert Sibande College will closed until they demands are met.

EVANDER – Classes at Gert Sibande College have been suspended until further notice amid the National Education, Health and Allied Workers’ Union (Nehawu) strike that began on Wednesday, 13 February.

Nehawu has announced that it will intensify the week-long nationwide strike at TVET and CET colleges after a meeting between union members and Higher Education and Training Minister Naledi Pandor collapsed.

Mr Nathi Khumalo, branch chairman, said the matter that has resulted in the strike, has been before the council and the department since April 2015 under the stewardship of Mr Gwebinkundla Felix Qonde.

He said the department failed to address their issues, even after the march in November 2017.

“Our demands include full time employment for contract workers.

“We also call on the department to stop the issues of outsourcing services such as security and cleaners.

“Most of the times the security guards are exploited by the contractors and pay them less, while they get a lot of money from the department.

“We are peaceful and just fighting for our rights. What we only did was tell those workers to vacate classes.

“We spoke to the Student’s Representative Council and promised them that we will have catch up programmes, but for now we are still fighting for our rights.”

Mr Khumalo said they will continue with the strike until their demands are met.
