Premier pleads with taxi associations to honour recent signed agreement
Taxi associations sign three months agreement.
HIGHVELD – Ms Refilwe Mtsweni, Mpumalanga premier, pleaded on Saturday, 23 March with Vukanini Taxi Association (Vukta) and Zamokuhle Taxi Association (Zamta) members to honour the agreement that they recently signed.
The associations signed a peace agreement after the intervention of the Mpumalanga Provincial Government following the recent taxi violence.
The feud over routes between the two associations began in December when Vukta heard that the municipality allegedly gave Zamta a taxi rank in Secunda.
Ms Mtsweni was accompanied by two MECs, Mr Gillion Mashego and Mr Norah Mahlangu, to give feedback to the Leandra community on the progress made.
She told the community that the operation was planned to resume on Friday, 22 March, and that both associations will make use of the Secunda route.
The leadership of the associations said they are satisfied with the three-month agreement.
They hope that it will assist in ensuring lasting solutions.
Mr Meddy Mahlangu, Zamta chairman, said they are hoping that this is beginning of a new era, and that they will respect the resolution in order to keep the peace.
“We hope that the provincial government will provide lasting solutions and not take sides. We are law abiding citizens and we will do what is right.”
Mr Fanyana Sibanyoni, chairman of Vukta, said he is happy that the community meeting was held to clarify the matter, and they will ensure that their association operates according to the permits provided.
