The EFF however, trumped the DA as official opposition in Mpumalanga and according to Sunday newspaper, the ANC managed to gain 22 seats, the EFF 4, the DA 3 and the VF+ 1 in the province.

The results of the national and provincial elections in Standerton on 8 May went overwhelmingly in favour of the ANC with a percentage of 68,97 after 24 007 voters cast their ballots for the ruling party.

The DA showed a result of 12,26 per cent with 4 267 ballots in their support, the EFF tallied 9,55 per cent with 3 325 voters supporting them and the Vryheidsfront Plus recorded 4,36 per cent with their 1 516 ballots.

Standerton Town Hall was a hub of activity when driving past at 8am, not of a queue of voters, but mostly party workers getting ready to rally up their supporters.

The Standerton Advertiser cast two ballots at 9.35am and stopped at the offices of the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) in Beyers Naudé Street to enquire on an appropriate time for comment.

IEC-officials would have counted ballot papers through the night to furnish the outcome to their head office.

The ANC, EFF and DA had their tables, umbrellas and party agents stationed strategically and the mood was one of goodwill.

“Things are running smoothly,” Mr Herence Motalane of the EFF commented.

The above was echoed by the ANC-members at the next stop.

“We are the ruling party. Everything is going very well,” Mr Sizwe Dlamini said.

Mr Dlamini also said they have a positive attitude as regards the outcome of the elections.

When trying to get hold of Mr Rosier de Ville, DA councillor for Ward 10, he was slowly driving towards the main entrance of the town hall with elderly voters.

“Many people are positive,” Mr De Ville commented at 10.10am.

The looming winter months were uppermost in the mind of Ms Sithi Silosini, a PR-councillor of the DA, with suggestions on how locals could stay warm with possible loadshedding on the cards.

Mr De Ville gave an estimated result of Ward 10 on 10 May, saying the DA had a good voting percentage and did well.
