Man appears in court for rape and murder of eMzinoni girl

The suspect was remanded in custody for a formal bail application and will appear at the same court on 17 September.

BETHAL – A 37-year-old man appeared in the Bethal Magistrate’s Court, today, 11 September,  in connection with the rape and murder of Nomthandazo Methula (13).

 

She was murdered at Malema Section, in eMzinoni  on Sunday, 8 September.

 

According to Brig Leonard Hlathi, provincial police spokesman, a neighbour sent Nomthandazo to a nearby shop that morning, but the girl never returned home.

 

Her parents and several community members searched for her but to no avail.

 

Nomthandazo’s body was discovered by a passer-by close to her home early on Monday morning, 9 September, who then informed the child’s parents and they in turn reported the matter to the police.

 

The police took the suspect in for questioning that same day.

 

The suspect was remanded in custody for a formal bail application and will appear at the same court on 17 September.

 

The Provincial Police Commissioner, Lieut Gen Mondli Zuma welcomed the swift arrest of the suspect.
