Thieves steal 16 cars in Secunda in September

CCTV footage taken from a houses in Delagoa and Cornelia Streets shows a white VW Golf passing the gates.

SECUNDA – More than a dozen vehicles were stolen in Secunda in September.

The total of stolen vehicles, of which five were taken over the weekend of 20 to 22 September, are almost 20.

These include cars, and specifically bakkies.

The neighbourhood around Delagoa, Cornelia, Pheffer and Albasini Streets in the CPF’s Sector 2, was especially a hot spot the last two weeks.

Neighbours were alerted of two bakkies stolen from yards in the early hours of Friday, 20 September.

Capt Bettina Zondo, spokesman for the Secunda Police, said the thieves target especially old vehicles and bakkies.

The vehicle stops and three passengers alight and move towards the house.

In another camera frame, the same men appear to push a bakkie down the road. This bakkie was stolen.

StratconRisk and the police recovered a stolen bakkie on Friday morning 27 September.

This bakkie with a bicycle in the back, was stolen at about 3am in Hendrik de Waal Street, Secunda.

Stratcon and the police chased down the suspects on the road to Evander.

The thieves abandoned the vehicle when they realised the police were on their heels.

Capt Zondo asked residents to come forward if they have information about the Golf and its occupants.

She also advised owners of old vehicles to fit it with a tracking device and an alarm system. Theft out of vehicles is also a major headache.

This was rife at the weekend.

“Place your belongings in the boot of your car even before you stop at a store. If you take out the items in plain sight and then store it in the boot of your car, criminals might see it and break open the boot.”

The police and StratconRisk recovered this stolen bakkie on Friday morning, 27 September.
