Lekwa will help to develop skills of unemployed youth

The aim is to establish a culture of public service within the youth, exposing them to challenges within communities and providing useful skills to enable them to develop their own communities.

Lekwa Municipality has committed themselves to absorb unemployed youth from Morgenzon as traffic officials.

The Standerton Advertiser published an article in its edition of 30 August about a delay in their commitment, citing a letter written to the municipal manager, Ms Gugu Mhlongo-Ntshangase, outlining the Department of Rural Development and Land Reform’s endeavour to train traffic officers.

Mr Muso Kubheka, DA-councillor in Morgenzon, brought it to the newspaper’s attention.

Traffic officers will form part of the National Rural Youth Services Corps, a skills development programme administered by the department.

The aim is to establish a culture of public service within the youth, exposing them to challenges within communities and providing useful skills to enable them to develop their own communities.

The programme trains young unemployed matriculants between the age of 18 and 25, who live in rural areas.

An advertisement was placed for applications from all South Africans citizens as per the following requirements:

• Strictly living in the Lekwa Municipality area (proof of residence)
• Unemployed and not studying
• Between 18 and 25 years of age
• In possession of a valid Grade 12 certificate
• In possession of a valid driver’s licence
• Physically fit

Additional requirements were the ability to apply for a tax reference number at their nearest SARS office, availability to attend leadership training immediately upon enrolment for four months out of the province and availability for a further 12 months to attend skills training.

Successful applicants will receive a monthly stipend of R1 320.00 per month and will also be required to sign a two-year-contract.

Applications forms could be collected from the municipal offices in Mbonani Mayisela Street and the closing date was 18 September.
