EVANDER – Many residents were regularly faced with dried up taps from 13 December until Friday, 3 January.
Rumours had it that Govan Mbeki Municipality failed to pay Rand Water and thus the reason for no water.
However, Ms Mariaan Chamberlain, DA councillor, saw proof from the municipality that Rand Water had indeed been paid.
Some residents were thankful to have running water in their homes on Christmas Day, but by Thursday, 2 January, they were again complaining that the water pressure was low, and the water supply was again depleted by Friday, 3 January.
Ms Chamberlain received a video from a resident on Saturday, 4 January of water flowing out of a stormwater drain after a pipe burst.
She then discovered that the pipe had burst on 13 December and municipal staff never closed the valve when they repaired it. This was the cause of the low water pressure.
“That valve was open since 13 December and all that clean drinking water was flowing away,” said Ms Chamberlain.
“That is why the reservoir supplying Evander with water was not filling up.”
