GMM responds: Motorist not abiding to point duty officers at intersections is a huge concern

HIGHVELD – The Ridge Times reported in last week’s edition, 14 February, the challenges and danger that both motorists and point duty officers face on a daily basis.

At the time of going to press, Govan Mbeki Municipality did not respond to emails regarding this story. However, a response was received on Monday, 17 February.

“The day to day responsibilities of the point duty officers are to control traffic at key intersections within GMM during peak hours. Point duty officers are provided with pocket books to report bad drivers and non-compliance. They often face road users who are failing to obey the rules of the roads.”

“The traffic officers are deployed to the key intersections so as to monitor and fine the perpetrators. Road users must obey the rules of the roads and ensure safety of all motorists and maintain discipline at all times,” said Mr Lucky Mhlongo, Communications officer for Govan Mbeki Municipality.
