eMBALENHLE – The Govan Mbeki Municipality embarked on an initiative to clear illegal dumpsites in the area.
Rubble, torn garbage bags, bottles and even baby nappies are strewn about on most of the street corners in eMbalenhle.
Other street corners in the township have also been turned into dumpsites.
This has become a common sight in the area and it is a threat to public health – not only to humans, but also to the wildlife alike.
The Govan Mbeki Municipality has made several calls to the public to refrain from this dumping their rubbish everywhere, however this continues.
The municipality promised to enforce by-laws on illegal dumpers and urged locals to report those who are littering.
The council said in a press statement it is high time that transgressors are brought to book.
“We urge residents to also assist by refraining from dumping refuse illegally.
“Our refuse removal service continues to operate during this period of the COVID-19 Level 4 lockdown.
“Waste should be collected in refuse bags and placed for collection on waste removal days. Please spread the news in the community that dumping of waste is dangerous and a health hazard.”
Residents are urged to report service delivery complaints to the municipal call centre at 0800 6000 01/2/4 or send a WhatsApp message to 083 790 0659.
