The Govan Mbeki Municipal Forum and the municipal health and environmental services provided schools in the area with 20l of hand sanitisers and fumigated a few schools already.
Mr Tsunke Hlanyane, senior manager of municipal health and environmental services, said they work with the department and the school principals.
The municipal health services and the Department of Health are monitoring all communities including facilities and conducting inspections and monitoring.
“We cannot stop the virus or say no one will get the virus, however we are doing our preventative measures and support we can give,” said Mr Hlanyane.
He said they do not provide sanitisers to individuals or organisations but they request individuals to go to the school principals in their areas and speak to the school governing bodies in order to limit the community to go to the schools or be around children.
Mr Thipe Mokgoshi, secretary of the Govan Mbeki Municipal Forum, said they launched a project called Adopt a School – Fumigation/Sanitising and they urged business entities to support them.
With this initiative, the forum that is representing the community, requested businesses to adopt a school and facilitate that school by providing sanitising booths and fumigation to ensure that the children and their families are safe.
“One more infection is too many for our community and society, we all need to work together to prevent the spread of Covid-19,” said Mr Mokgoshi.
“We believe that companies operating locally, need to protect their employees, their families and their children when they return to school.
“Right now, our most valuable asset is our children’s health.”
He thanked the contractors who have made commitments to adopt and sponsor schools already.
