SECUNDA – A local lawyer was arrested and thrown into the same police holding cell as his clients on Wednesday night, 3 June. The arrest ensued while the lawyer allegedly tried to represent two young men accused of shoplifting.
The men were apprehended in a local supermarket on suspicion of nicking pies and the security guards took them to the store’s control room. Their family members summoned the lawyer.
The lawyer appeared in the Secunda Magistrate’s Court on Thursday morning and was released on warning.
The charges that are being investigated against the attorney, are interfering with police duties, malicious damage to property, crimen injuria, assault on a police officer and resisting arrest.
Capt Gerhard Elmes, spokesman for Secunda police, confirmed the incident.
The case was postponed to 7 July.
