The community of Standerton was informed towards the latter part of May about 11 trail-awaiting prisoners who escaped from the holding cells in Sakhile.
The Standerton Advertiser published several snippets on its website about the police work involved in re-apprehending the escapees. Altogether nine prisoners were still at large on 29 May.
The communications officer of the Sakhile Police, Const Duduzile Zwane, confirmed later that two were successfully re-arrested.
Police and community joined forces in the arrests and three suspects were back in custody.
Const Zwane said on Monday, 8 June that three escapees are still on the loose.
Police arrested them in connection with charges ranging from dealing in drugs, housebreaking and robbery to rape.
