Police van transporting prisoners to Bethal Correctional Centre involved in accident

A detainee sustained serious head injuries while six others were slightly injured. Two police officers also sustained slight injuries.

BETHAL – A police vehicle transporting prisoners, collided with another vehicle in Moses Kotane Street, next to the Total filling station on Thursday 25 June.

According to police, the driver of the police bakkie lost control over the vehicle while avoiding a head-on collision with an oncoming vehicle.

When police arrived on the scene, they had found the bakkie overturned with prisoners still inside. They were being transported from the Kriel Magistrate’s Court to the Bethal Correctional Centre.

A detainee sustained serious head injuries while six others were slightly injured. Two police officers also sustained slight injuries.

The driver of the other vehicle escaped unharmed.

The Mpumalanga Emergency Services from Bethal attended the scene and rendered medical assistance to injured detainees and transported them to Bethal Hospital.

The Mpumalanga provincial traffic department, the Govan Mbeki municipal traffic department, Govan Mbeki Fire and Rescue and Bethal police were called to the scene.
