Sasol hands over community parks and PPE
The renovated community parks and safety equipment were officially handed over to GMM on Thursday, 9 July, at the Sasol Community Centre in Kinross.
KINROSS – Sasol has been investing in several projects within the Govan Mbeki Municipality (GMM) for more than 30 years.
The company’s aim for these projects is to focus on promoting the protection of the environment and the safety of the community, promoting health and welfare, education and skills development.
Among these projects are the renovation of community parks in Kinross and Secunda, as well as providing government and communities with safety equipment and resources during the Covid-19 pandemic.
The renovated community parks and safety equipment were officially handed over to GMM on Thursday, 9 July, at the Sasol Community Centre in Kinross.
This is Sasol’s contribution towards the welfare of communities by creating safe and green recreational spaces.
The condition of these parks had deteriorated over the years and Sasol took a decision to renovate them in collaboration with Govan Mbeki Municipality.
In 2017, the Kinross community park renovation project was endorsed, with the first phase commencing in January this year.

Sasol appointed two local contractors, Mkhalamuni Construction and Waka Holdings to implement the initial phase of renovations, with Ricky B as subcontractor.
These local small, medium and micro enterprises also sourced local labour to allow skills transfer.
These contractors were provided with technical support by Sasol engineers for the duration of the job to guarantee the work is delivered on time and according to the specifications.
The scope of work for the first phase of the projects included refurbishing the existing ablution facilities and store rooms, repairing the playground equipment, existing storm water inlets and spillway structures, installing an outdoor chess set, braai stands, a mini soccer pitch and a tall light mast to increase visibility at night for security purposes, clearing vegetation and the entrance of the park was also upgraded to help control public and vehicle access.
Additionally as part of the Sasol Covid-19 pandemic community response, Sasol handed over safety equipment to be used by the municipality for sanitising all their facilities.
These safety equipment include five 8-litre pressure sprayers, 200 Tyvek suits, 32 precept disinfectant bottles, 14 Drager half filter masks with canisters, 55 Uvex safety glasses, 200 disposable plastic aprons, 12 sets of hazmat gloves, 24 Sanifog disinfectant spray bottles and 100 FFP1 face masks.

“Working hand-in-hand with a broad range of social partners, in particular government, civil society and our fenceline communities. We are driving our response efforts to equip and support our communities, our schools and those in the front line of fighting the pandemic. We also partnered with GMM to ensure upgrading of our recreational facility in preparation for a time when we will see families having picnics and children playing in the parks again.” ms Ndou added.
