Gauteng police nab two cops from Secunda flying squad
When they searched the vehicle, the occupants claimed that the dagga they had in their vehicle had in fact already been taken by police members in a marked Mpumalanga flying squad vehicle from Secunda.
Police in Gauteng chased after and arrested two members from the Secunda flying squad in Springs on Friday, 24 July.
The arrests ensued after the police from Ekurhuleni District stopped a private vehicle at a roadblock near Devon on the R29.
When they searched the vehicle, the occupants claimed that the dagga they had in their vehicle had in fact already been taken by police members in a marked Mpumalanga flying squad vehicle from Secunda. These members had also allegedly demanded and taken money from the occupants in the private vehicle.
The Gauteng cops realised that their Mpumalanga counterparts had earlier on passed through the roadblock.
They chased after the Secunda cops and cornered them at a road intersection in Springs. The members were found in possession of dagga and cash, and arrested on the spot.
In a joint press statement, the Mpumalanga and Gauteng police provincial commissioners, Lieut-Gen Mondli Zuma and Elias Mawela said the two suspects are now facing both a criminal charge as well as departmental steps that have been sanctioned as a matter of urgency.
Reacting to this arrest, Generals Mawela and Zuma commended the Gauteng officers who have demonstrated high discipline by arresting their own, and aligned themselves with the police’s anti-corruption strategy that seeks to root out corruption from within the ranks.
