DA wants Cogta’s intervention in protest actions

The DA requested intervention on the part of Mr Mandla Msibi, MEC of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta).

Mr Muso Kubheka, DA-councillor in the Gert Sibande Municipality, issued a press release on Friday, 7 August, calling for urgent intervention in the ongoing violent municipal workers protest in Standerton.

The DA requested intervention on the part of Mr Mandla Msibi, MEC of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta).

Mr Kubheka said the protests of the municipal workers have left the people of Lekwa without water and electricity.

No solution could be found with regard to the 6,25 per cent salary increment demanded by the South African Municipal Workers Union (Samwu).

The statement touched on refuse not being collected, disconnection of electricity and the Covid-19 restrictions not adhered to.

According to the DA, Samwu also took its protest action to Morgenzon, Ward 14 on Thursday, 6 August and forcefully chased workers at the water treatment plant, fire brigade and municipal satellite offices.

“We condemn any violence or acts of intimidation in protests and discourage any forms of breaking the law.”
