Electricians demand overtime payment leaving Bethal residents in the dark

It is said that the workers vowed not to return to work until they are paid for the overtime they have worked.

BETHAL – The Govan Mbeki Municipality’s electricians have downed their tools, leaving some parts of Bethal without electricity.
Some areas have been without power for more than 24 hours.
The disgruntled electricians now demand that the Govan Mbeki Municipality pay them for the overtime they have worked.
They have allegedly worked 60 hours overtime, exceeding the 40 working hours as per the municipal policy.
It is said that the workers vowed not to return to work until they are paid for the overtime they have worked.
Mr Benzi Soko, municipal, spokesman, confirmed that workers downed their tools in demand to be paid overtime.
“We regret this unfortunate situation that the dispute between the Govan Mbeki Municipality and workers is now affecting the residents.
“However Mr Felani Mnedebele, municipal manager, and Mr Billy Ndlovu, acting regional manager, are in talks with the workers.
“We hope the meeting will yield positive results.”
