Sewage overflow in Standerton is health hazard for especially children and the elderly

Mr Pillay referred to the pandemic and added that the overflow poses an increased risk to children and the elderly living around it.

Mr Jay Pillay of Standerton reported a sewage overflow at the intersection of Capriona and Wingfield Streets more than two months ago.

According to Mr Pillay, the Lekwa Municipality supplied him in June with reference number 64292 and when reporting it again in July, reference number 032431 was given. He said that no one from the municipality has come out to look at it to date.

There has also been no tankers to supply water to the area for a period of two weeks.

The Standerton Advertiser received his e-mail and subsequent correspondence to the Department of Water and Sanitation. One reply, dated late August from Mr Solly Mkhabela, said the matter will be attended to as soon as possible.

The newspaper sent a WhatsApp-message to the communications manager of the municipality, Ms Thobeka Mtshiselwa, on Thursday, 17 September, giving the reference numbers.

No reply was received at the time of going to press.
