Santaco launches its tactical response team during Transport Month celebrations
The South African National Taxi Council in Mpumalanga is committed to promote peace in the taxi industry.
eMBALENHLE – The South African National Taxi Council (Santaco) in Mpumalanga has launched its Tactical Response Team (TRT) which will deal with conflict resolution and provide security in case violence erupts.
This was launched during the Transport Month celebration held at Raiseble Garden in Extension 26 on Wednesday, 14 September.
The unit will serve as law enforcement within the industry and focus on conflict resolution.
Santaco in the province is aiming to bring stability to the taxi industry and to end violence.
Mr Fanyana Sibanyoni, Santaco chairman, said the unit will contribute in ensuring the safety of drivers, owners and passengers.
He said it is time that the taxi industry transforms and be professional.
“For now we will employ 24 trained people. They will also attend an advanced driving course. We are committed to promoting peace, stability and excellence in the taxi industry.
“We will not wait for the government but we will do things on our own.”
Mr Phillip Nyoni from the Mpumalanga Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison, (DCSSL) applauded the Santaco for this initiative.
He said the department is pleased with the change and improvement in the provincial taxi industry.
“We want to thank all drivers and owners who worked under the difficult circumstances caused by Covid-19. You stood the test of time and served our people.
“We know that at some point the business was not doing well, but you did not give up.
“Continue promoting peace and stability in the industry, the taxi industry is very important in the economy of this country.”
