Aspiring pig farmers from various provinces attend training at eMbalenhle

Aspiring pig farmers learn more about the industry.

eMBALENHLE – Aspiring pig farmers from various provinces recently took part in the Qabso National Piggery Development Programme held at eMbalenhle.

They received training that covered all aspects of pig production such as practical knowledge of pig farming, business and management skills.

The training is aimed at developing sustainable, viable pig farms.

The 15 days training included lessons on how to grow a pig, feed consumption, medication and gestation.

Mr Menzi Gumede, general manager, said the programme began in June and they hope that it will branch out to all provinces in the country.

“The industry needs to grow to provide top-quality pork.

“Our training will provide the foundation for this to happen.”

Ms Lindokuhle Hlophe, a student, said she learned a lot and that she could not wait to go to her hometown to implement what has she learned.

“This was far more than I expected, I have gained so much knowledge here and I cannot wait to put into practice.

“I believe that next year this time, I will be on another level.

“When I get home, I will educate my peers about this business.”

The students also received practical training from a seasoned farmer Mr Chris Manda.

After the training, each student received 10 piglets.
