eMZINONI – More than 50 girls took part in the Empowering Teenage Mothers programme that was conducted by the SAVF Bethal social workers.
The programme began in February, but it was on hold due to the national lockdown. It is funded by the DG Murray Trust (DGMT).
Ms Hlobisile Nxumalo, the facilitator, said the project aimed at educating teenage mothers about parenting and to raise awareness about the ever-increasing teenage pregnancy in the area.
She said her office noted with concerns that many teenage girls between Grade 10 and 11 often drop out of school because of pregnancy.
“Hence we decided to embark on this programme and did not cater just for teenage mothers, but all girls.
“Teenage mothers were taught about various topics including carrying for their children, financial education, family planning and qualities of a good mother.
“While those who do not have children were taught about the dangers and challenges of teen pregnancy.”
She said they will continue with a similar programme in the future.
The attendees received certificates of competency.
