Govan Mbeki Municipality bans fireworks on New Year’s Eve

Govan Mbeki Municipality has cancelled all fireworks display including the Graceland pyrotechnic show.

The Govan Mbeki Municipality has placed a restriction on the use of fireworks for the festive season.

The municipality issued a statement that pursuant to the Disaster Management Act and the regulations thereto, social gatherings and movement of persons are severely impacted. The regulations provide that every person is confined to his or her place of residence from 9pm until 6pm.

Accordingly, Govan Mbeki Municipality has cancelled all fireworks display including the Graceland pyrotechnic show.

Consequently, there are no designated areas for the discharge of fireworks this year.

It is important to note that fireworks may not be set off in any public place.

In terms of the Explosive Act 1956 it is illegal to set off fireworks 200 meters within a public place (residential), petrol station, hospital, street or pavement and animal welfare organisations.

The public is therefore urged to refrain from detonating fireworks this year and honour the president’s plea of candlelight display as a show of support for the frontline workers and in remembrance of the loved ones who have passed on due to the pandemic.
