Two people drown during traditional baptism ceremony in Piet Retief

“The community were conducting a traditional baptism in the river, when a man and a woman disappeared under the water.”

Delta 1 Rescue Divers recovered the bodies of two people who drowned in a river in Piet Retief on 19 January.

Mr Andries Lee, one of the directors of Delta 1 Rescue Diving, said: “Our team received a call about a double drowning in Piet Retief.”

He stated that the drowning took place in the Assegaai River.

“The community were conducting a traditional baptism in the river, when a man and woman disappeared under the water.”

Three divers recovered both of the bodies about 40 minutes into their search.
