Govan Mbeki Joint Movement is heading to high court to forced CoGTA to dissolve GMM Council

"We are at the stage where we are taking the matter to the High Court. We have already appointed a law firm and filed papers, “ said Mr Sifisosethu Malaza, chairman of the Govan Mbeki Joint Movement.

HIGHVELD – The Govan Mbeki Joint Movement (GMJM) is heading to high court put pressure on Mpumalanga’s Department of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA) to dissolve the Govan Mbeki Municipal Council.

This cames after Govan Mbeki Joint Movement served a petition on CoGTA and the Mpumalanga legislature late last year.

In response to the petition, both CoGTA and the legislature responded to the petition.

According to letters communicated between GMJM and the Mpumalanga Provincial Legislature, the matter was directed to CoGTA in December.

The Movement wanted GMM to be placed under administration under section 139(1)(c) of the constitution.

CoGTA noted the request and responded that the executive council has resolved to intervene in Govan Mbeki Local Municipality in terms of section 139(1)(b).

In a letter to the movement, CoGTA stated that the province is currently in the process of appointing an administration team for the municipality.

“We are at the stage where we are taking the matter to the High Court. We have already appointed a law firm and filed papers, “ said Mr Sifisosethu Malaza, chairman of the Govan Mbeki Joint Movement.

“We requested the Mpumalanga Provincial Legislature to intervene but they failed us. CoGTA failed to implement section 139(1)(c).

“ We were surprised to hear that Govan Mbeki Municipality appointed a new mayor and mayoral committee,” said Mr Malaza .

The movement wants a High Court ruling because they want to know the outcome of their petition.

They also want answers as to why a new mayoral committee was chosen.

The committee of the Movement believes they disregarded Country constitution and laws.

“We are done with political party leadership, we don’t need politicians any more regardless of party affiliation.

“As the community, we are going to stand for ourselves in the coming local government elections because politicians are only there for themselves and they are controlled by masters, that’s why they can’t take decisions while community suffer.

“ That’s why we ask all community members in Govan Mbeki Municipality to be part of us and to fight this corruption and maladministration by politicians who only think of themselves using our votes.

“We are waiting for high court date where all will be stopped,” said Mr Malaza.
