Breyten residents face “troubled waters”

According to Ms Hannetjie Oberholzer, another resident, her main concern is battling with the hygienic challenges the water outage pose - especially during the current pandemic.

Come hell or high water, residents of Breyten demand answers from the Msukaligwa Local Municipality over the water outage in town.

Mr Theo Craven, control room operator for ACSU and the district manager for South African Communicty Crime Watch Gert Sibande Region warned people on 24 February to avoid the area due to the ongoing protest.

Some residents in Thabo Village claim to have been without water for 9 months.

They have reported this to the Msukaligwa Municipality and their respective ward councillors, but in vain.

According to residents, financial constraints rendered the municipalty incapable to repair the broken water pump causing the outage, which is apparently just one of the problems.

“We have to get water from residents who have water, take our clothes to laundromats on a weekly basis and have to buy water to drink,” Ms Bets Scheepers, a resident, said.

According to Ms Hannetjie Oberholzer, another resident, her main concern is battling with the hygienic challenges the water outage pose – especially during the current pandemic.

“How do I clean my child’s clothes without water and keep him safe?” she asked.
