GMM arrests civil movement members
Our members were detained for a night in holding cells and we are unclear about the charges.”
EVANDER – Two members of the Govan Mbeki Joint Civil Movement were arrested last Thursday, 18 February.
The organisation said their fundraising team members were arrested by Govan Mbeki Municipality’s law enforcers while in a meeting at Evander.
“We were told that our members were arrested because they were impersonating Govan Mbeki municipal officials.
“When asked how, they told us it has to do with our organisation’s emblem and the colour of our uniform,” said Mr Sifisosethu Malaza, chairman of the movement.
He said their members were released and the matter is still under investigation.
“We will wait for the investigation to be completed.
“Our members were detained for a night in the holding cells and we are unclear about the charges. First they said it was fraud, then they changed it to impersonating their officials. Our lawyer is now working on the matter,” said Mr Malaza.
Govan Mbeki Joint Movement said it suspects that the municipality is doing this to scare them because they (GMJCM) filed an application at the High Court where they want the Govan Mbeki municipal council to be dissolved and they want all those who are implicated in the section 106 investigation report to be suspended by the municipality until they are being cleared of allegations against them.
“As the movement, we thought by this time all those implicated will be behind bars or suspended, but unfortunately our municipality’s concern is emblems rather than recovering money that was stolen by politicians and officials. We are not scared, we are waiting for High Court date.
“Our emblem does look similar to that of GMM, but there is a difference,” said Mr Malaza.
